Cape Verde – What does it take to make a Deposit Return System work on an island?

Plastic and glass bottles pose a growing environmental challenge, especially for island nations like Cape Verde where waste management options are limited, and logistics are complex. One potential solution is a Deposit Return System (DRS), which can help reduce litter, improve recycling rates, and support a more circular economy.
But what does it take to make such a system work in Cape Verde and how can financial feasibility be achieved?
Paulo Azevedo (German-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and Daniela Tavera Jiménez (Black Forest Solutions GmbH) are two experts who were directly involved in a recent feasibility study. Daniela will introduce the outline key findings, while Paulo will provide insights into the current state of introducing a DRS and explain what steps might be further needed to move a DRS closer to reality.
Join us to learn more about the potential of a DRS in Cape Verde, the hurdles still to overcome, followed by a Q&A session where you can ask your questions directly to our experts.
The ‘Innovations and Solutions’ webinar series is initiated by the GIZ project ‘Environmental Protection Worldwide’ as part of the Export Initiative for Environmental Protection launched by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment. The Export Initiative aims to promote knowledge transfer, support the development and strengthening of networks, and provide advice to suppliers of environmental technologies on possible applications and investments in target countries.
This monthly and ongoing webinar series presents “Innovations and Solutions” to decision-makers and practitioners from the public and private sectors in partner countries. The objective is to establish initial contacts, expand knowledge of viable technological solutions, generate interest in their local application, and lay the foundation for future cooperation.
